Facing Who We Are

Someone close to me recently had to pull back from all that she normally does in Church. She had to shift her focus as there were issues arising at home which required attention. Always serving, always helping, this was a new season of doing little except sitting at the feet of Jesus and allowing their relationship to minister to each other. Sounds pretty straight forward, but of course there was a struggle. Who knows that so much of what we do can easily define who we are? Whatever profession or career we have entered into, gives us a title, a position in this world, a spot where people can notice who we are and what we are good at. If we are parents, this further establishes who we are. The jobs and responsibilities we have gives us purpose and a reason for getting up in the morning. The beauty about Mary is that it reminds us we are never to get our sense of who we are by what we are doing. This is easier to write than achieve. Serving is important - don’t get me wrong. But at the end of the day, our relationship with Jesus is what we will be defined by when we stand before Him face to face. That was what Jesus meant by Mary has chosen the better part. If you had to stop what you were doing right now, your job, the role that defines you, who would you be? Would you have a mid life crisis? Or would you feel secure in your position and worth in Christ?

    Sandra,

This is an awesome post. Thank you!

At first, panic and mayhem would set in. Then with the gentle hand of God as a reminder that He’s the one we need to focus on I would take a deep breath and thank HIM for what He is doing in my life and ask, What next Lord?.

We really do need to focus on the Lord and do what He wants us to do, not what we want to do.

    Many blessings,

    Kimberly

    Hi Kimberly
Thanks for your message. I was reminded again today in Church how performance orientated we can be - our society runs ths way. And yet God doesn’t want us to do anything unless we fully understand that He accepts us they way we are. We don’t have to earn his time, his love or approval. He just loves us.

This has been my journey for a while now. It seems that sitting at His feet encourages others to show concern and sometimes not in the nicest of ways. When the activities in our life begin to settle, calm and sometimes even cease, for various reasons, the assumption is that something is wrong. Falling away? Losing your faith? It never is, Great! She is getting closer to the Lover of her soul. I say out loud that I would welcome a cessation in some of the roles of my life, others, maybe not so much (in my heart). But, I have been on an earnest searching out of my true identity in Christ and I have found that there is much security, significance and peace that lie within this understanding and appropriation of the Truth, and as He directs and charts the course for my life as my Life, there is much of just that sitting and listening and being awed by that one good thing. That is my Jesus. God has blessed you most abundantly. You are loved! In Him, In Christ Alone
